Last week was one of the scariest I had been through as a dog mama. My dog, DJ. had to have emergency surgery after we found a giant mass on his liver, and a spot on his spleen, that lead to a week long stay in a critical care veterinary hospital. I've posted before about how thankful I am for the unlimited PTO policy that I have working for AHEAD (formerly CDI LLC), but I was never more grateful than last week when my colleagues jumped in to help cover for me after needing to take a few unexpected days off, too.Yesterday I had the flexibility from working from a hotel room from CT - where the vet was - before bringing my little guy home. Now that we are home, I'm also incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work from home full time, as my living room has also become a temporary puppy rehabilitation facility. The fact that I'm able to work from my couch, and have some flexibility to keep and eye on DJ while he continues to heal is something I do not take for granted. However, DJ is now watching everything I'm doing - I've always joked he's my at home supervisor, but now he's watching everything with an especially close eye (when he's not sleeping!).Thank you to both Benjamin Cervantes and Brian Del Cid for all their help last week keeping things running smoothly without me for a few days! I'm lucky to work with such great colleagues! A special thank you to the incredible Pieper Veterinary also for taking the best care of my fur baby. I wouldn't have been able to do this in most of my previous positions. I'm so very, very grateful for my fellow Aheadians! #OneAHEAD

Has your clinic been non-stop busy since 7:00 a.m.? Your veterinary team is constantly on the move, juggling appointments, surgeries, charting, and client calls. If your staff looks like they're on the verge of a breakdown, it might be time to focus on improving employee satisfaction. One effective way to support your team and enhance the clinic overall is by implementing education initiatives. #VeterinaryPracticeCulture #VeterinaryIndustry

How do you promote psychological safety within your team?At our most recent Veterinary Nurse Think Tank with Becky Jones RVN, we discussed 'Speaking up - Having courage in conversations.'It was fantastic to hear first-hand experiences from the amazing nurses who attended. Liza Ebeck, Senior Cardiology RVN at James Specialist Veterinary Cardiology shared this:"I get RVNs involved in checklists, which really helps them get used to advocating for safety. They can learn how to say to a senior surgeon, "you've just contaminated that drape" without fear... and for the sake of their patients."Thanks for sharing your experience Liza - it really highlights the crucial role of RVNs and SVNs in patient safety, and implementing strategies like this to keep a shallow hierarchy and maintain psychological safety is so important.Do you do anything similar within your veterinary team? We'd love to hear in the comments!Want to join our next VNTT? They're free to join and always full of inspiring discussions and relatable experiences. Keep an eye on our socials for details of the upcoming session!#vntt #vetnursethinktank #RVN #vetnurselife #CPD #VetNurseCPD #PsychologicalSafety #patientsafety

Navigating Quiet Strength: Understanding Introversion in the Veterinary ProfessionToday is World Introvert Day and I wanted to take a moment to shine a light on introversion, especially within the demanding and dynamic world of veterinary medicine.Being an introvert in the veterinary profession means more than preferring quiet spaces; it's about how we recharge after a long shift, process information, and interact with our teams and clients. In an industry facing constantly evolving challenges—from emotional burnout, the impacts of cost of living, teams working beyond capacity and the fast-paced nature of clinic life—understanding and supporting our introverted colleagues is not just beneficial but necessary. What It Means to Be an Introverted Veterinary Professional:Introverts often bring deep focus, keen observation skills, and a thoughtful approach to their practice. They might thrive in one-on-one interactions or enjoy the deep work of medical cases and surgery. However, the high-stress environment, long hours spent in consult with clients and collaborative demands can be particularly wearing for introverted individuals.Current Challenges:The veterinary profession is currently grappling with high rates of burnout, mental health issues, and staffing shortages. Introverts, with their need for quiet and reflection, can be more susceptible, yet their methodical and compassionate approach bring huge value and balance to practice life.Tips for Supporting Introverts in the Clinic:Create Quiet Zones: Allow spaces where introverted staff can have a moment of respite from the bustling clinic environment.Respect Processing Time: Understand that introverts might need additional time to think through cases or decisions.Foster Open Communication: Encourage team members to share their preferred work styles and adjust workflows accordingly.Acknowledge Varied Contributions: Celebrate the diverse strengths team members bring to the table, recognising that both introverts and extroverts offer valuable perspectives. This World Introvert Day, I just wanted to shine a light on better understanding and supporting our introverted colleagues, ensuring a more inclusive and robust veterinary community. By engaging the quiet strength of introverts, we enrich our professional environment, improve care outcomes, and promote a healthier work life for all.#worldintrovertday #introvertlife #veterinary #veterinarycareers #growthmindset #vetnurse #vettech #inclusionmatters

US Veterinary Employers of all kinds, this message is for you! I need your input to help move the needle for working parents in vet med. I've created a survey to get a better idea of the current state of parental leave in veterinary medicine, and I need you to complete it!Research has shown the benefits of parental leave in the physical and mental health of working parents and their families, and it's even been shown to be good for business. The problem is that without a parental leave policy at the national level, employers are mostly left on their own to figure out what to offer and to make it happen. As a certified RETAIN parental leave coach, I want to find ways to better support working parents in vet med and those who employ them. The saying "if you can't measure it, you can't manage it" by Peter Drucker applies here. Please help me by sharing what you currently offer and what barriers you face. Your feedback will only be shared in aggregate and anonymously. I'm tagging some industry leaders who are in a position to either complete the survey or help spread my request to those in their network. Even if you're not tagged, please take the survey if it applies to you. And please SHARE this post and link with your network!I'm open to any questions you may have. Thanks for your help with this important project!Link to survey in the comments!Michael Raphael Marie Holowaychuk, DVM, DACVECC, CYT Sandra Faeh, DVM Molly McAllister, DVM, MPH Dr. Whitney Miller, DVM, MBA, DACVPM Dr. Tannetje Crocker Cindy Trice

Burnout: is it the system or you ? Plot : Surgeons huddled around a coffee station during a rare break, their voices a mix of weariness and determination. "This schedule isn't sustainable," one commented, "We need to find a better way." Another chimed in, "It's the support staff. We're bogged down in paperwork that they could handle, taking time away from patients." An experienced surgeon added, "It's a system-wide issue – the hours, expectations, it's all a recipe for burnout. But remember, carving out time for yourself, even if it's just a quick walk during lunch, can help. And don't be afraid to ask for help, both at work and at home. We can't do this aloneHere at OneAO2024, surgeons from different divisions like veterinary, hand, CMF, Trauma, and Spine discussed the problem and the solution. Great meeting . Sometimes we just want to run away and hide!If you feel the same as Jess on a daily basis then it could be a sign you may be struggling with your confidence.Low confidence refers to a general lack of belief in one's abilities, skills, and judgment. In veterinary surgeons, this can manifest in several ways:- Hesitation and indecision:Difficulty making surgical choices, second-guessing diagnoses, and fearing mistakes.- Increased stress and anxiety: Feeling overwhelmed by pressure, leading to emotional exhaustion and burnout.- Avoidance behaviors: Opting out of complex surgeries or challenging cases, hindering professional growth.- Poor communication:Difficulty discussing treatment options confidently with clients, potentially eroding trust.- Imposter syndrome: Feeling like a fraud despite qualifications, leading to self-doubt and negative self-talk.These can have a significant impact on the vet, the practice, and ultimately, animal care.So what are the benefits of Improved Confidence?Benefits for you:- Reduced stress and burnout:Improved mental health and emotional well-being, leading to a more fulfilling career.- Enhanced decision-making: Clearer thinking, leading to better surgical choices and improved patient outcomes.- Increased communication skills: Building trust with clients through confident discussions and explanations of treatment options.- Greater job satisfaction:Finding joy and fulfillment in practice, promoting a positive and productive work environment.- Career advancement: Confidence opens doors to new opportunities, leadership roles, and professional growth.Oh and there are the benefits for Others...- Improved patient care: Confident surgeons make better decisions, leading to better outcomes and happier pet owners.- Stronger client relationships: Effective communication builds trust and fosters a positive client experience.- Stronger personal relationships: when you can go home and no longer be stressing about your work problems and how you "messed up" that day. it's life-changing for all the family.- More efficient practice: Reduced stress and faffing contributes to a calmer, more productive work environment for the whole team.- Positive work culture: Confidence is contagious, uplifting the entire practice environment and potentially attracting top talent.Investing in the confidence of veterinary surgeons is a win-win for everyone involved, leading to a thriving practice, happier vets, and ultimately, the best possible care for animals.I'd love to hear about your relationship with confidence. Does life seem easier when you're feeling confident?Perhaps you're struggling with a loss of confidence and don't know how to get your mojo back?feel free to send me a DM if you need some help x
